Burn injuries are a major but often overlooked public health challenge in Ethiopia, particularly affecting women and children. Most injuries result from open-fire cooking and unsafe use of petroleum products. Limited access to specialized treatment, inadequate surgical capacity, and insufficient rehabilitation services contribute to high mortality rates and lifelong disabilities.
Since 2007, the Children’s Burn & Wound Care Foundation of Ethiopia (CBWCF), founded by Norwegian partners Einar Eriksen and Hans Petter Schjelderup, has worked to improve burn care nationwide. More than 3,000 patients have received life-saving treatment, while specialized burn units and training programs have strengthened healthcare capacity across Ethiopia.
To address the growing need for pediatric burn care, CBWCF and Rotary partners will establish a Specialized Pediatric Burn and Wound Treatment Center at Kidus Petros Specialized Hospital (KPSH) in Addis Ababa. KPSH will own the equipment, while CBWCF will operate the center and lead training activities.
The center will provide modern treatment and rehabilitation services for at least 600 patients over three years, train 40 healthcare professionals, strengthen referral networks, and support burn prevention and community awareness programs. Although based in Addis Ababa, it will serve patients from across Ethiopia.
The Global Grant project focuses on equipping the center with essential medical equipment, providing professional training, and facilitating knowledge exchange between Ethiopian and Norwegian healthcare institutions.
With a total budget of USD 141,900, the project aims to reduce burn-related mortality and disability, improve access to specialized care, and create sustainable long-term benefits for Ethiopia’s healthcare system and its most vulnerable patients.
The Rotary Clubs of Harstad with partners Notodden and Askøy will run the Global Grant project together with Rotary Club of Hawassa, CBWCF and KPSH

Brannskader er en stor, men ofte oversett folkehelseutfordring i Etiopia, og rammer særlig kvinner og barn. De fleste skadene skyldes matlaging over åpne ildsteder og uforsvarlig bruk av petroleumsprodukter. Begrenset tilgang til spesialisert behandling, utilstrekkelig kirurgisk kapasitet og mangelfulle rehabiliteringstjenester bidrar til høy dødelighet og livsvarige funksjonsnedsettelser.
Siden 2007 har Children’s Burn & Wound Care Foundation of Ethiopia (CBWCF), grunnlagt av de norske initiativtakerne Einar Eriksen og Hans Petter Schjelderup, arbeidet for å styrke brannskadebehandlingen i Etiopia. Mer enn 3 000 pasienter har mottatt livreddende behandling, samtidig som spesialiserte brannskadeenheter og opplæringsprogrammer har bidratt til å bygge opp helsefaglig kapasitet over hele landet.
For å møte det økende behovet for behandling av brannskadde barn vil CBWCF og Rotary-partnerne etablere et spesialisert behandlingssenter for brannskader ved Kidus Petros Specialized Hospital (KPSH) i Addis Abeba. KPSH vil eie utstyret, mens CBWCF skal drive senteret og lede opplæringsaktivitetene.
Senteret skal tilby moderne behandling og rehabilitering til minst 600 pasienter i løpet av tre år, gi opplæring til 40 helsearbeidere, styrke henvisningsnettverk mellom sykehus og gjennomføre forebyggende tiltak og informasjonsarbeid. Selv om senteret er lokalisert i Addis Abeba, vil det ta imot pasienter fra hele Etiopia.
Global Grant-prosjektet fokuserer på å utstyre senteret med nødvendig medisinsk utstyr, tilby faglig opplæring og legge til rette for kunnskapsutveksling mellom etiopiske og norske helseinstitusjoner.
Med et totalbudsjett på ca 1,4 mill kr. har prosjektet som mål å redusere dødelighet og funksjonsnedsettelser knyttet til brannskader, forbedre tilgangen til spesialisert behandling og skape varige gevinster for Etiopias helsesystem og de mest sårbare pasientene.
Rotaryklubben i Harstad, sammen med partnerklubbene Notodden og Askøy, vil gjennomføre Global Grant-prosjektet i samarbeid med Rotary Club of Hawassa, CBWCF og KPSH.
